First pregnancy is achieved by uterus transplant

A Turkish woman of 23 years has become the first recipient of a transplanted uterus that has managed to become pregnant, according to today announced the CNNTürk station.

A team from the Faculty of Medicine, Akdeniz University in the southern city of Antalya, headed by Dr. Ömer Özkan, to implant an embryo in the uterus was transplanted to the patient in August 2011.

As reported by the University Hospital, implantation was performed two weeks ago and now it has become evident that pregnancy has started normally.

Derya Sert was the first woman to receive a uterus transplant from a dead donor, who died in a traffic accident.

Before the transplant, doctors removed and froze eggs from the patient, with the forecast being implanted after the operation.

Very few women have had in the world to successfully transplant the uterus, but to date none of them had become pregnant, so pregnancy Sert will be followed with great attention by doctors from different countries.

The uterus transplant technique would help many women who for various reasons do not have uterus to gestate.
